“The one thing that has transformed my sleep”

Can a mattress really revolutionise our sleep? Head of Digital, Amy Moore, shares her review of a Simba Hybrid Mattress.

There is an art to getting a good night’s sleep, especially in midlife.

Being a fairly light sleeper, the smallest of disturbances can stir me. A creak in the floorboard, my partner rolling over in his slumber, a standby TV light glowing like a beacon…

Over the years, I’ve taken to making adjustments. Ear plugs? Check. Magnesium before bed? You bet. Blackout blinds? Naturally.

But nothing, and I don’t say this lightly, has been such a gamechanger as switching up my mattress. Yes, really.

The Simba Hybrid Mattress – my honest review

I must admit, I was a bit ignorant when it came to mattresses. Surely there can’t be that much difference between them, I thought to myself. How wrong a person can be.

From support zones and foam to the number of springs and layers of cushioning, the world of mattresses is vast – especially to the uninitiated.

After some research, I decide to try a Simba Hybrid.

The description tells me that it contains innovative spring technology, nine support zones, a deep layer of foam for cushioning and a soft zip-off top to make washing a breeze. Purchasing a Hybrid mattress also includes complimentary Hybrid Pillows worth up to £218, too.

With prices starting from £899 for a King and a 10-year guarantee, I calculate each night’s kip at around 25p. A bargain if you ask me.

Delivery is swift – one less thing to lose sleep over – with the shrink-wrapped mattress easy to unpack and load onto the bedframe. A niggle of doubt creeps in here – I’m struggling to believe this wafer-thin item will expand into the bed of my dreams. But, sure enough, a short while later, the mattress rises to the occasion.

The instructions advise that the mattress is ready to use just six hours after unboxing, but could take up to 72 hours for it to fully fill out.

Without further ado, it’s time to give it a try.

The first night

I’ve never believed in love at first sight (or sleep) before, but this certainly was it.

I slip between the sheets and automatically feel held. The mattress is firm, but with enough give to allow my body to comfortably sink in. Usually I toss and turn for several minutes, but tonight I settle instantly and drop off in a matter of moments.

Being an early bird, I’m generally in bed by 10.30pm, with my partner coming to bed a couple of hours later. This is usually when I encounter my first disturbance, as he lumbers in beside me. Then, I continue to stir in the night each time he rolls over.

But not tonight. I don’t even feel the slightest tremor – sleeping all the way through until morning.

This, apparently, is due to the technology used in the mattress. It contains a staggering 1900 micro springs that provide support by helping to contour to my body and relieve pressure. Plus, these mini marvels have been designed to compress inwards, limiting the transfer of movement.

When I do eventually wake, I feel incredibly well rested. I usually notice a bit of an ache here or a pain there in the morning. But nothing. I feel renewed!

And, I couldn’t complete this review without discussing the temperature. The fact that I slept through the night is testament to Simba’s heat dissipation. The mattress contains something called Simbatex® foam, which, to you and me, means that it’s been designed to support better air flow. It also contains graphite, which has been shown to dissipate heat, allowing for a fresher night’s sleep.

The verdict

Several weeks on and it’s safe to say I’m a Simba convert, so much so that I bring it up at every opportunity to friends, family, colleagues… even people at the bus stop.

It truly has been a gamechanger for my sleep and, given that I’ve recently upped my exercise, I’ve really noticed the difference the next day in terms of any aches. I genuinely feel my body is finally getting the rest it deserves.

Still unsure? Simba offers an amazing 200-night trial, so you’ve nothing to lose.
