Try our tiramisu recipe (with longevity-supporting ingredients)

There are few things better than a spoonful of coffee-soaked sponge with chocolate-dusted creamy mascarpone. Our tiramisu recipe – complete with longevity-supporting ingredients – is the perfect way to round off a dinner party with loved ones.

Why longevity? Well, the addition of coffee and cacao are star ingredients here.

In 2016, the World Health Organisation recognised coffee’s health-boosting benefits, stating that it can ‘reduce the risk of five different types of cancer’, including uterine and liver cancers. Plus, a meta-analysis published in the BMJ concluded that those who drink three or more cups a day have a reduced risk of some of our deadliest diseases, including chronic liver disease, Parkinson’s and leukaemia, to name a few.

As for cacao, it’s thought the polyphenols have longevity-supporting effects. These powerful antioxidants help to mop up damaging free radicals. The compounds in cacao may even play a role in modulating the genes involved with longevity, supporting healthy ageing.

After making our tiramisu recipe, put in the fridge for at least three hours to chill. Then serve for a sweet treat your guests will love!

Ingredients

  • 200g Savoiardi biscuits
  • 4 espressos (about 120ml)
  • 4 eggs
  • 75g granulated sugar
  • 350g mascarpone
  • 2 tbsp Marsala (optional)
  • Cacao powder to dust

Method

  1. Lay out the biscuits and pour the espresso into a shallow bowl.
  2. Separate the eggs and whisk the whites until you have stiff peaks.
  3. Beat the yolks with the sugar until pale and creamy.
  4. Put the mascarpone in a bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until creamy. Then add the egg yolk mix and beat until fully combined. Stir in the Marsala if using.
  5. Add the egg whites to the mascarpone mix and gently fold in until fully combined.
  6. Dip the biscuits into the coffee and put a layer of them in the bottom of the dish (two 20x16cm or one 40x32cm).
  7. Spread half the mascarpone over the biscuits, then top with another layer of coffee-dipped biscuits.
  8. Cover with the remaining mascarpone and dust with cacao powder. Put in the fridge to chill for three hours before serving.
