PoB Hotels review in Devon and Cornwall: “Perfect for those seeking a blend of luxury and adventure”

As a summer of sport beckons, Brits across the country are seizing the opportunity to delve into new activities. Here, personal trainer and travel writer, Grace Turner, ventures to to three Pride of Britain (PoB) hotels in Devon and Cornwall to experience their ‘Get Set and Go’ campaign and try her hand at an array of sporting activities.

Exploring the PoB Hotels

Bovey Castle

First stop on my tour (after a two-hour train ride from London and a short picturesque car journey over Dartmoor) is Bovey Castle. Set within 275 acres of sweeping lawns, woodland, and lakes, the castle is reminiscent of those you’d find in a fairytale. Plus, the perfectly landscaped 18-hole golf course is an impressive sight, too.

Here, expect luxury at it’s finest. The staff dress impeccably, with uniforms that complement the exquisite decor of the castle. With a spacious feel, it’s easy to find a seat in one of the hotel’s many sitting rooms – the perfect place to read a book by the open fire or listen to the grand piano playing in the background.

Those seeking adventure won’t be disappointed. Take a wander around the grounds, or have a go at tennis and archery. There’s even falconry displays for something a little wilder!

Plus, have no fear if you have kids in tow. There’s a newly refurbished barn full of toys for the little ones and an extensive games room, kitted out with screens, headsets and beanbags that’s ideal for keeping even the most unimpressed teenagers amused.

For complete relaxation, indulge in the array of spa treatments at the Elan Spa and enjoy the indoor pool with its breathtaking views of the grounds.

An e-bike tour of Dartmoor is a true highlight of my stay. We cover 17km of hilly terrain with ease in just 90 mins. The e-bikes make light work of this activity, providing a pleasurable tour of the surrounding area.

Rooms start at £254 a night

The Nare

Situated in a secluded bay with panoramic views of Carne beach, The Nare is a luxurious country house by the sea. With only 40 rooms, it has a cosy, intimate feel, with a nautical theme runing throughout. From the eclectic fish wallpaper to the ship-like balconies, thalassophiles will feel right at home here. And, not forgetting those serene views over the bay.

The hotel has undergone numerous upgrades in recent years, including the opening of The Whittington Suites by Dame Judy Dench in 2021. The restaurant has also been expanded, alongside the addition of more rooms.

Tennis fans won’t be disappointed here and the court at The Nare isn’t to be missed. Overlooking Carne Beach, it offers players impressive views of pristine sands and rolling waves.

Plus, there is plenty of opportunity for more salty adventures. Located in the perfect location to try kayaking or sailing – The Nare offers unique opportunities to experience the Cornish coast. And, for rest days, don’t miss the heated outdoor pool, hot tub and spa facilities. Pure bliss!

Double rooms start at £406 per night and includes breakfast and afternoon Cornish cream tea

The Headland Hotel

The final stop on my trip of PoB hotels is to Fistral Beach, home of The Headland Hotel. This place is truly a highlight for me – and the spa facilities, in particular, are second to none.

The pool at The Aqua Club, ranked among the top 10 in the world, provides an exquisite retreat, perfect for an afternoon of relaxation and rejuvenation. My massage epitomises luxury and indulgence too, leaving me feeling completely replenished.

For those after something a bit more exhilarating, book in for a surf session at the Surf Sanctuary.

I head to my first surf lesson with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. I needn’t have worried, however. The expert guidance of my instructor, Dom, instantly puts me at ease. I can honestly say I’ve never had so much fun! A word of warning though that you might ache the following day. But from a combination of the twisting and turning that surfing requires, and sheer belly laughing.

Rooms start at £215 per night
