Inside Bodysgallen Hall and Spa hotel: “The perfect antidote to climbing Snowdonia”

Liz Earle heads to North Wales to review Bodysgallen Hall and Spa – a historic hotel run by the National Trust.

Inside Bodysgallen Hall and Spa, North Wales

Nestled in the verdant hills of North Wales, Bodysgallen Hall and Spa is an oasis of traditional, calm hospitality. From the stone-wall lined driveway that sweeps past sheep-filled fields, the moment you approach this 17th-century country house there is a sense of timeless elegance.

Bodysgallen Hall is more than just a hotel; it’s a journey through centuries, where each room and walled garden tells a story.

One of the Historic House Hotels run by the National Trust, the hall itself is a Grade I listed building, retaining its original period features under the Trust’s careful guardianship. Antique furnishings create an authentically comfortable atmosphere and the hall’s history positively oozes from its thick stone walls. Panelled reception rooms feature vast fireplaces and cosy sofas, while the bedrooms are prettily decorated with traditional chintz fabrics, with the modern comforts of good mattresses, fine bed linen and Nespresso machines.

From the spacious suites with their sweeping views of the Snowdonia mountains to the cosy classic rooms, each bedroom has been thoughtfully put together. I was especially impressed by the bathrooms, too often marred by antique plumbing in establishments of this age, but the water was pressurised, plentiful and piping hot – and I appreciated the Penhaligon toiletries too.

Relax at the spa

I was staying in North Wales to hike up nearby Mount Snowdon, so was especially keen to recover in the hotel’s spa, a pretty, rustic sanctuary of wellness.

The facilities include a large swimming pool, sauna, steam room, and a well-equipped gym, all housed within a converted stone building. The treatment menu is extensive, offering everything from soothing facials and invigorating massages to holistic therapies.

The spa uses Aromatherapy Associates (a favourite spa brand of mine). My signature treatment massage with Mia was first class. Having climbed to the summit of Mount Snowdon the day before, I was especially in need of some physical restoration and I would highly recommend Mia as a massage therapist.

What to eat

Dining at Bodysgallen Hall is a treat for the senses too. The restaurant, set in a grand dining room with views over the lush gardens, serves an array of delicious dishes crafted from locally-sourced ingredients.

The menu is a celebration of Welsh produce, with seasonal dishes that highlight the region’s rich culinary heritage. Mine included seasonal freshly-picked asparagus, Welsh lamb and Caerphilly cheese.

Take time to explore

Last but not least, the gardens at Bodysgallen Hall are a genuine highlight and picturesque setting for a leisurely stroll. The formal gardens, with their meticulously manicured lawns (perfect for grounding!), topiary and vibrant flower beds, are a testament to their centuries of careful cultivation.

I loved my stroll around the walled kitchen garden, leading on to a scenic woodland walk. The perfect antidote for any Snowdonian climbing exertion – or peaceful escape from the bustle of everyday life.

Plan your visit

There are regular trains from London Euston to Llandudno Junction station, taking just under three hours. The station is then two miles from the hotel in a taxi.
