Cheesy trail nut mix recipe

Although it contains no cheese, the nutritional yeast in this simple trail mix recipe adds a cheesy flavour to any selection of nuts. The perfect little something to nibble on between meals, whether you’re hiking a trail or simply struggling to make it to dinner time! They’re also a handy snack to have to hand for those following a plant-based diet.

What nuts to use in our trail mix recipe

Nuts are one of our go-to favourite snacks at the Wellbeing Studios as they’re teeming with healthy vitamins and minerals. Some of our favourites? Almonds are an absolute must. They’re a great source of healthy fats that help us to feel fuller for longer and support our heart health too. Almonds are also rich in magnesium and vitamin E, which keep our skin plump and supple.

Cashews are another favourite. They’re a good source of protein and unsaturated fat. As a result, you may notice you feel fuller for longer after eating a handful of cashews.

Nutritional yeast is often a staple in plant-based cooking. It adds a delicious cheesy flavour without the need for dairy. What’s more, it brings a wealth of benefits, too.

Nutritional yeast is a good source of plant-based protein and it also contains a number of vitamins, including vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is essential for our mood and energy levels – it also supports our nervous system.

Wellbeing Wisdom

In 2013 a ground-breaking Harvard study of 120,000 participants found nut-eaters had lower LDL (considered the ‘bad’ form of cholesterol) and lower blood pressure, likely due to the high levels of healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytochemicals in nuts. All nuts, to a lesser or greater degree, are rich in healthy fats, and contain protein, vitamins, minerals and valuable fibre.

Ingredients

  • 300g mixed nuts
  • 1 tbsp oil of choice (olive or rapeseed works well)
  • 1 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • Sea salt and black pepper, to taste

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4. Add the nuts to a bowl and add in the oil, nutritional yeast, herbs, salt and pepper. Mix together well so all the nuts are coated.
  2. Place on a roasting tray with the seasoning and pop in the oven for around five minutes until golden and toasted. Keep in an airtight container as a snack.
