8 of the best lip plumpers for fuller lips in midlife

As we age, lips gradually start to lose volume causing them to become thinner and less defined than they once were.

While it’s a change that’s completely normal – it comes thanks to a decline in collagen and the loss of skin elasticity – it’s something that can cause lips to look less full and vibrant.

But it’s not all bad news, because with the right topical products, it’s possible to restore some lost volume and achieve a defined pout once again.

Why our lips change with age

Before we start reaching for lip plumpers, it’s important to understand why the appearance of our lips change over time. As makeup artist Joyce Connor explains, genetics could play a part but it’s also down to the natural ageing process. “As we get older we start to lose both collagen and elastin, causing lips to look thinner and less pronounced,” she says.

James Davis, midlife coach and co-founder of Midlife Mentors, agrees, adding: “We also have decreased amounts of hyaluronic acid, which leads to a more dehydrated look. There are general environmental and UV damage factors to consider that can accelerate skin ageing, too. Plus there is a decrease in oestrogen at menopause that can play a role. This is a hormone that helps maintain skin thickness, hydration and elasticity.”

How to make lips look fuller in midlife

Of course, there is the option of fillers – hyaluronic acid-based injections – that can provide longer-term fullness, but we’d always advise doing research and seeking out a qualified, reputable professional. It’s worth noting, though, that filler isn’t a permanent solution as it needs to be topped up every few months depending on how quickly the body metabolises it.

However, for those of us keen to steer clear of the needles, it is possible to temporarily plump the lips.

“Topical products – like lip plumpers – often contain ingredients like menthol or pepper that irritate the skin and can cause slight swelling; they cause that classic tingling feeling,” says James. “Some products also contain hyaluronic acid that draws moisture into the lips, making them appear firmer. Others may use ingredients that encourage collagen production, like peptides, which may help with a subtle increase of lip volume over time.”
