‘Wellness doesn’t need to be complicated – what I learned on a trip to a French island’

Writer Stacey Carter samples the wellness offering on the French island of Île de Ré and shares a review of her stay at L’Hotel de Toiras.

Switching off is a key part of wellbeing and there are few better ways to relax than a weekend away – especially if it’s to Île de Ré.

This tiny French island is perched on the Atlantic Coast, and is a four-hour drive from Paris.

Famed for its long sandy beaches, abundance of seafood, and network of cycle paths, Île de Ré has a rich history too, with historical monuments and fortifications that date back to 1627. It is quintessentially French; so much so, that many Parisians have second homes on the island – a weekend escape for when the bustle of city living becomes too much.

Arriving in Île de Ré

Once over the bridge from the mainland, you enter the outskirts of Saint-Marie-de-Ré: think sandy bike trails, fields of wild flowers, patches of woodland, and serene, beachy vibes.

This pretty port town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Houses with pastel coloured shutters line the cobbled streets, while shops and cafés offer views out over the harbour.

The town has a laidback feel – the streets are fairly quiet during the week, but become a hub of activity at the weekend as more tourists descend.

Staying at L’Hôtel de Toiras

It’s here that I arrive at my destination for the next few days. L’Hotel de Toiras, a five-star luxury hotel, sits near the main harbour and features 18 individually designed rooms.

My suite looks out over the harbour and features a king-sized bed, elegant wood furnishings, and an en suite complete with a rolltop bath. I instantly feel my shoulders sinking away from my ears.

The hotel boasts a light, airy feel throughout and, alongside the luxurious bedrooms, you’ll also find a bar, lounge, and the hotel restaurant, Georges.

Dining at L’Hotel de Toiras

Dinner at Georges is a highlight. This small, terraced restaurant offers views over the harbour and showcases French food at its finest. Choose from a starter of fresh oysters and langoustines, or opt for something classically French with escargots.

The seafood dishes are truly stand out – the risotto featuring the catch of the day (John Dory) was a personal favourite.

Plus, let’s not forget dessert. Layered chocolate praline mousse, a pistachio sponge, lemon muesli tartlet… who can resist?

Embracing wellness in Île de Ré

Cycling is big news here – there are 140km of cycle paths to explore, passing through wild moors, woodlands, beaches, and villages.

The island is almost completely flat, making it easy to get around. I bookend a bike ride with lunch at one of the many seafood bars around the island. Conveniently, many places provide bike stations to park at while you eat, too.

Sea swimming is another activity to tick off – Île de Ré is famed for its crystal blue waters.

While a dip in the Atlantic Ocean isn’t for the faint-hearted, it really does wake you up. Plus, several of the beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status.

Relaxing treatments

After all that activity, L’Hotel de Toiras offers in-room spa treatments to help guests relax and unwind.

I opt for a soothing massage that utilises Olivier Claire products – oils with notes of plum and hazelnut. It’s the perfect antidote to a day spent biking around the island,

Plus, guests can also use the facilities at the hotel’s sister villa, Villa Clarisse. Just a five-minute walk from L’Hotel de Toiras, Villa Clarisse has a pool and spa facilities, along with two wooden cabins designed for treatments – book in advance to avoid disappointment.

My visit to Île de Ré was a true self-care trip. A reminder that wellness doesn’t have to be over-complicated; sometimes, it’s as simple as disconnecting and embracing the softer side of life.
