Amada Colossos review – family-friendly luxury in Rhodes, Greece
Family-friendly luxury on the island of Rhodes – perfect for sun, sea and a generous dose of relaxation. Our Head of Digital, Amy Moore, shares the highlights of her stay at the Amada Colossos Resort.
Our review of Amada Colossos Resort Rhodes
Location
The Amada Colossos is located on a sandy stretch of Kallithea beach, a short drive from the airport, with Rhodes Town just a few miles to the north and the party hub of Faliraki a stone’s throw away. Lindos, a quaint yet bustling village half-way down the island, is also just a short drive or boat trip away.
The hotel has exclusive use of its own stretch of beach and, being surrounded by sweeping views of the countryside, you’ll feel a million miles from the throng of city living.
Those who enjoy a walk out in the evenings may be a little disappointed with the lack of shops and eateries around the hotel. That being said, Rhodes Town is an easy bus or taxi journey away. Here, you can wander the cobbled streets of this medieval town and pick up souvenirs to take home. An expert tour guide is an excellent way to get an insider’s view of Rhodes’ fascinating history, too.
Accommodation
There are an impressive 17 different room types available at the hotel. These range from sea- and hill-view guest rooms to sea-front suites and villas with their own private pools.
I stay in a stunning Sea View Executive Suite. This is located at the top of the hotel and offers a completely undisturbed view of the sea. It also overlooks the hotel’s vast pool (more on that later).
My room, complete with a spacious bedroom, living area, walk-in wardrobe and bathroom, is airy, cool and – above all – incredibly luxurious.
The balcony spans the entire length of the room and is the perfect spot for a morning coffee overlooking the sea.
Talking of the sea, what makes this room all-the-more special is the sound of the waves, which lull me off to a comfortable slumber each night.
Facilities
The jewel in the crown of Amada Colossos is undoubtedly its pool, which is a staggering 140m long. Sweeping across the length of the hotel, it boasts two swim-up bars and an adults-only area for those seeking peace and quiet.
Gazebos line the hotel’s private beach – a more than 400m sandy stretch – and are ideal for lazy, sunny days. These luxury retreats also feature fresh fruit, snacks and chilled drinks.
Got the kids in tow? The five-slide waterpark will be a huge draw for them, but, being located away from the main centre of the resort, you won’t know it’s there unless you go looking for it.
Those seeking a little more adventure should head to the water sports area down on the beach. Here you can test your nerve with water skis and wakeboards. Alternatively, opt for a more relaxed vibe with a session on a paddleboard.
Plus, the hotel recently teamed up with Go Dive Rhodes. This local PADI-certified diving centre provides the perfect opportunity to explore the underwater world.
The spa
While the spa isn’t the most extensive in the world, it does offer a welcome sanctuary from the buzz of the pool area.
Pad into a cool, softly lit entrance where you’re greeted by the friendly spa team with a refreshing drink of lemon and ginger. From here, you’ll be guided into changing rooms where soft, fluffy robes and slippers are waiting for you.
Explore the steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi and ice bath before heading into one of the treatment rooms.
My back massage is second to none, with my therapist providing a full treatment to ease the tension and knots away from my shoulders. A tell-tale sign of too many evenings spent hunkering over my computer!
The food
You’ll be spoilt for choice with the food at Amada Colossos. The hotel boasts an impressive 16 restaurants and bars!
The main restaurant offers extensive buffet dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with something to suit all tastes. Fresh salads and authentic Greek cuisine are in abundance – think indulgent spanakopita, tangy tzatziki and crisp pitta breads.
An array of meats and fresh fish provide an easy way to keep dinners light and protein-rich. Have no fear, however, as there’s space for indulgence too with pasta, pizzas and a tempting pudding selection. I’ve never been one to resist baklava, dripping with honey and nuts…
Three a-la-carte restaurants are available for those seeking a more exclusive dining experience. I was treated to meals in both Votsala (a Greek taverna) and Hai (Asian fusion dining).
Votsala is a celebration of Greek cuisine, with meze-style dishes of dips, breads, seafood and fresh veggies, all washed down with locally-sourced wine. It’s a great space to connect with friends and loved ones, sharing dishes and discovering new flavours.
Meanwhile, Hai offers a taste of the East, with spicy, flavoursome dishes of bao buns, spring rolls and zingy veg.
The service in both restaurants explains why Greek hospitality is considered one of the best in the world. With every whim catered for, you certainly won’t leave feeling hungry.
Added extras
New for 2023, guests are able to book private cruises on luxury yachts through the hotel. It’s an excellent way to see more of Rhodes in true, movie-star style. I can imagine it would be the perfect setting for a birthday celebration or hen party.
I board our yacht just outside of Rhodes town. We set sail for around 45 minutes, making a brief stop at Kallithea Springs before arriving at a nearby cove for an afternoon of swimming and pure relaxation.
The team on board take care of your every need – including a private chef who prepares tasty snacks throughout the day and the most delicious three-course lunch.
