Ways to improve the appearance of jowls

Looking to improve the appearance of ‘jowls’? As we get older, it’s normal for our skin to lose its elasticity and experience a loss of volume. As a result, we may notice changes to the definition in our jawline and neck, which can lead to the appearance of so-called jowls.

Lifestyle factors, such as smoking and excessive sun exposure, can cause premature ageing, and you may be more likely to get jowls if your parents have, too.

While these changes are common with age, there’s no shame in wanting to improve the appearance of jowls either. Read on for our top tips.

How to improve the appearance of jowls

Non-surgical treatments

Cleverly placed fillers can help to improve the appearance of sagging jowls.

Most fillers work by injecting hyaluronic acid into the skin to increase loss of volume and plump out any wrinkles, and fine lines. They can help to smooth out the jawline and fill out jowls.

Depending on the type of filler used, this is a semi-permanent option, as most fillers last between six to 12 months (although some last longer). They can cost anywhere upwards of £200.

Botox may also be an option to help tighten and add definition to the jawline.

Always visit a licensed practitioner and make sure to do your research into a clinic before going ahead with filler or botox.

Gua sha and facial massage

Many swear by using gua sha tools to help give their faces a more sculpted appearance.

While they won’t permanently completely sculpt away jowls, they can help to temporarily create a more sculpted, contoured appearance when used regularly, similarly to a facial massage.

After applying a facial oil, sweep the stone beauty tool across your face and neck – experts say that you need to be consistent to see results.

Clever ingredients

Choosing skincare ingredients carefully may help you to improve the appearance of any jowls, although they won’t make them disappear.

Hyaluronic acid applied topically can help to plump out the skin, as it helps the skin to retain moisture.

Meanwhile, retinoids or vitamin A can help to increase collagen production in the skin for a fresher, plumper-looking appearance.

Makeup masterclass

You can create a more contoured look to your face by using strategically placed makeup.

Bronzers can help to add definition to your face, but makeup artists often say avoid using anything shimmery on more mature skin.

Surgical procedures

If you want a permanent solution to sagging jowls, a surgical face or neck lift may be an option for you.

This works by lifting and pulling the skin in these areas and removing any excess skin for a tighter appearance.

Experts say a face lift will last around 10 years, but skin will continue to change with age. The NHS says recovery from a face lift is at least two to four weeks, and it may take up to six to nine months before you see the full effects.

Always do your research into cosmetic surgery clinics and specialists before taking the plunge, and weigh up the risk factors of going under the knife.
