Liz explains why she’s ditched fluoride toothpaste (and the dental products she really rates)

Fluoride toothpaste has long been considered a non-negotiable when it comes to caring for our teeth. But, with emerging research exploring the wider impact fluoride might have on our health, many of us are beginning to question if it’s the only option.

“This is a question I get asked a lot,” says our founder, Liz Earle. “Do we need fluoride to strengthen our teeth? In my view, and that of many functional dentists, there are better alternatives.”

Here, Liz reveals how she keeps her teeth in tip-top condition and shares the products she loves for optimal dental health.

How fluoride may affect the body

One of the main reasons Liz has ditched fluoride toothpaste is due to the way that fluoride interacts with iodine.

“Fluoride competes with iodine, and it can affect thyroid hormone production,” she says. “It can also accumulate in our pineal gland, which helps to regulate our circadian rhythm. This, in turn, helps to control better sleep.”

Do we need fluoride to strengthen teeth?

Fluoride is commonly added to toothpaste to help strengthen enamel, but as Liz explains, it isn’t our only option.

“One ingredient that I like is hydroxyapatite,” she says. “This is a mineral that has been proven to strengthen tooth enamel.”

Liz explains that she’s also noticed a significant improvement in her tooth sensitivity since using a toothpaste that contains hydroxyapatite.

Liz’s essential brushing habits

But toothpaste can only go so far. Honing our brushing technique is key to keeping bothersome bacteria at bay.

Liz recommends using a sonic electric toothbrush (like this one), which has been shown to remove more plaque than manual brushing.

“Angle the brush at about 30 degrees into the gum line,” she advises. “That’s where those harmful bacteria tend to sit.”

And, while it can be tempting to rinse your mouth after brushing, Liz suggests an alternative.

“If you’re using a toothpaste with beneficial ingredients, don’t rinse – just spit,” she says. “That way, ingredients like hydroxyapatite stay on the teeth for longer.”

The oral microbiome and the ingredients to avoid

Another reason Liz avoids many conventional toothpastes is their use of foaming agents such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).

“SLS is a detergent, and it can disrupt the oral microbiome,” Liz explains. “We don’t want to remove all our protective bacteria with foaming detergents. The same goes for alcohol-based mouthwashes – it’s best to step away from those too.”
