“The beauty advice I got completely wrong”

After nearly 40 years researching health, beauty and wellness, Liz has learned that looking well and looking young are two very different things – and that the most powerful beauty advice she ever received has nothing to do with what you put on your skin.

Plus: why period pains can get worse in midlife, how to eat an anti-inflammatory diet and finding the right retinoid for you.

The beauty advice I got completely wrong

Early in her career as a magazine journalist, Liz suffered from eczema and was given topical steroids – the standard advice at the time. It was only when she began speaking to nutritionists that she realised diet, lifestyle and healthy fats could change the skin in ways no cream could.

“We could change our skin and the way that we feel and look simply by what we’re doing from within,” Liz says. “Because up until that point, everything had been external.”

That insight led to her first book, Vital Oils – written at a time when the low-fat movement was at its peak and the idea of eating butter or extra virgin olive oil was considered counterculture.

On pro-ageing

Even when co-founding her skincare brand, Liz never used the term anti-ageing.

“I’ve always been pro-ageing,” she says. “I want to age. I mean, who doesn’t? We want to age well.”

Her goal – then and now – is healthy, strong, resilient, glowing skin. Not younger-looking skin.
