Cold-busting elderberry syrup
Looking for a natural remedy for coughs and colds? Look no further than our soothing elderberry syrup.
The black berries of the elder tree have historically been used as a natural remedy to support seasonal health and wellbeing. Reputed to help stave off the flu, coughs, and colds (and reduce their duration if you do succumb), the elderberry is a powerhouse of nutrients and antioxidants. Elderberries are particularly high in flavonoids, including anthocyanins, which help protect cells against damage.
These helpful berries are also full of vitamin C, helping to support our immune system. This elderberry syrup is a fantastic supplement for the whole family during the colder months. Add in the ginger and cloves for a spicy kick of immune-supporting value.

Wellbeing Wisdom
- Be sure to cook your elderberries before eating them, as they can be laxative and emetic when eaten raw.
Ingredients
- 1kg elderberries
- 1/2 lemon, juice
- 2cm piece fresh ginger, peeled
- 1/2 tsp cloves
- Honey, to taste
Method
- Gather your elderberries and strip them from the stems, discarding any that are unripe.
- Add to a large saucepan and add enough water to just cover the berries. Bring up to the boil, then simmer for 45 minutes or until the mixture thickens. Squeeze in the lemon juice.
- Very finely chop and crush the ginger and add it in along with the cloves
- Allow to cool before passing through a sieve, making sure to get the most out of the syrupy pulp. Sweeten with the honey to taste.
