Discover the five-star resort blending Alpine luxury with world-class wellness

Travel writer Hayley Hamilton shares her review of Hotel Sassongher, a five-star resort that blends Alpine wonder with world-class wellness.
Nestled in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, Hotel Sassongher is a luxury escape where adventure and restoration go hand in hand. This haven in northern Italy is perfect to rejuvenate both body and mind, with unfettered access to powdery slopes, a panoramic, mountain-view jacuzzi, and multiple restaurants offering the finest flavours.
Arriving at Hotel Sassongher

Getting to the hotel couldn’t be easier. Simply fly into a neighbouring airport, such as Innsbruck (Austrian Alps), Bolzano or Venice, and then drive or secure a transfer.
Regardless of which route you choose, the final approach through the South Tyrolean village of Corvara is not something you’ll easily forget. Think winding roads carved into jagged limestone peaks, snow-dusted forests and Alpine chalets…a true fairytale town as majestic as it is charming.
There’s also something to be said for the energising impact of the crisp mountain air. Corvara sits at an altitude of 1,568 metres above sea level, bringing a sharp, bracing chill in winter and refreshing coolness in the peak of summer.
Arriving at the property, it takes but a few deep inhales in the cold air to dissipate the tiredness that had lingered since my early flight.
Fueling the body for performance and wellness
With nature enthusiasts and winter sport aficionados flocking to Hotel Sassongher from all over the world, the hotel’s rest and recuperation offering is key. After all — the mental and physical benefits of a day on the slopes or out on a summer trail can only be maximised if the body and mind are recharged.
This all starts with quality sleep and good food — essential for long days spent outside.
Rooms at Hotel Sassongher feature heavy curtains or shutters to help create a blackout setting that’s free from distractions, while plush bedding and soft pillows offer the ultimate in comfort. Most rooms and suites are spacious, quiet, and offer mountain views. A sanctuary for winding down.
In the morning, fuel up at the buffet breakfast. Choose from protein-rich omelettes, or fresh fruits and healthy grains to provide energy for the day ahead.
Post-ski recovery at the Sky Spa

The hotel is open for two seasons: winter and summer. Both draw huge numbers of visitors, all seeking a balance of outdoor adventure and rejuvenation. Whether returning from a day of skiing or an afternoon trekking in the mountains, the site’s extensive range of wellbeing facilities are on-hand to facilitate deep recovery.
Passive exercise with the Chi machine
Not far from the pool, you’ll find the Japanese Chi Machine. Consisting of a mattress with a footstand that oscillates from left to right, the apparatus offers a form of passive aerobic exercise, applying gentle pressure to the body.
As the machine sways your legs back and forth, oxygen is metabolised, producing energy for the rest of the body. This low-impact movement feels especially good for those suffering from pain or swelling in the legs or back.
Deep tissue recovery using infrared therapy
There are two infrared cabins on-site. The first is near the saunas in the wellbeing area, and the second is up in the Sky Spa on the roof terrace.
Both use an innovative technology that delivers light to the body at specific wavelengths, optimised for cell repair. This option is ideal for treating pain and inflammation in a non-invasive way.
Waterbeds for deep relaxation
After a long day of skiing (and falling) this one very nearly put me to sleep.
The wave-like motions created by the water are incredibly soothing, making you feel weightless. Plus, it comes with a plethora of health benefits too. Besides alleviating tension, the continuous movement supports circulation. It also enables the spine to stretch and has a lymphatic drainage effect on the body.
Heat therapy in the saunas

Sweat it out and soak up the benefits of a sauna – there are plenty to choose from. Opt for one with panoramic mountain views, or head to the bio sauna, set at a balmy 58 degrees. There are more traditional spaces to enjoy too, complete with a mountain pine scent.
From easing aching muscles and supporting circulation to stimulating endorphins, the sauna is sure to become an essential tool in your recovery kit at Sassongher.
Cuisine for recovery and balance
It’s easy to fall into a wholesome routine during your stay. A restful night sleep and hearty breakfast; a few hours on the slopes and lunch in one of the nearby mountain-lodge eateries; a long session releasing the aches of the day in the many spa facilities; and finally, dinner and bed.
To say the culinary offering is one of the best I’ve had at any hotel would be an understatement. Served in the main restaurant overlooking the mountains or in one of the many cosy stubes, guests can enjoy a gourmet four-course menu reflective of an incredibly high international standard. Locally-sourced ingredients help to craft a rich and satisfying menu.
Available courses change each day, voyaging through a wide variety of flavours. Paccheri pasta with lobster ragù and rocket pesto; cream of porcini mushroom soup with thyme; and roasted rack of lamb in a savory bread crust.
The true star however is the beef fillet served in port sauce with truffle, beautifully paired with a high-elevation wine from Alto Adige.
All menus are accompanied by cheeses and hors d’oeuvre from the adjacent buffet. This includes anything from fresh salmon and roe to roasted artichokes and cured meats. Without fail, it was the perfect end to each day, leaving the body full and ready for sleep.
In a nutshell
Hotel Sassongher is an exceptional stay for anyone looking to combine outdoor excursions with rest and recovery. With a blend of cutting-edge facilities, exceptional cuisine and unwavering hospitality, it truly is a best-in-class wellness retreat.
Comfort Rooms start at €280 per night, based on two adults sharing on a half-board basis.
