Looking for a wellbeing city break? Try this hotel in the heart of East London

If you’re craving a city break that feels both energising and deeply restorative, Hart Shoreditch offers a welcome balance. Set in the vibrant heart of trendy East London, the hotel is perfectly placed for exploring, yet feels like a calm retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Inside Hart Shoreditch

From the moment I stepped inside, I was struck by the hotel’s modern, purpose-led design. The foyer opens into a light-filled bar and café, with generous seating that suits everything from focused working to a mindful coffee or even an evening cocktail.

Hart Shoreditch takes its name from the Hart family, 19th-century cabinet makers who once worked on this very site, and that legacy of craftsmanship is thoughtfully woven throughout the interiors as a subtle but meaningful nod to the building’s history.

Check-in was seamless, and soon I was settling into my room. Spacious and quietly comfortable, it had everything I needed: a thoughtful selection of coffee and herbal teas, a wonderfully comfortable bed, and views across East London’s historic skyline. The bathroom was stocked with Soapsmith’s Brick Lane toiletries – a beautifully botanical fragrance that felt both indulgent and rooted in the local area.

The restorative workshop

After unpacking, it was time for the early evening yin yoga and sound healing workshop, part of a recent series hosted by Fire + Alchemy. The session took place in the hotel’s lower ground event space. This is a calm, well-designed area that regularly hosts workshops, from creative crafting to movement and wellbeing classes.

At the end of a busy, slightly relentless week, the prospect of a quiet evening dedicated to restoration felt like a real gift. While I’m familiar with yoga, yin was new to me. Unlike more dynamic styles, poses are held for several minutes. This allows the body to soften as the mind settles, accompanied by the gentle immersion of a sound bath.

The slow, deliberate movements helped calm my nervous system, while the longer holds worked into the fascia – the deep connective tissue that can become tight through stress or prolonged sitting. I left feeling grounded, soothed and perfectly ready to wind down for the evening (and sink into that plush bed upstairs!).

Dining at UBA

After the session, I headed straight to the hotel’s restaurant, UBA, for an early supper. The Pan-Asian menu is fresh, vibrant and nourishing, with plenty of high-protein, high-fibre and gut-friendly options. Think sashimi, steamed dim sum, charred broccoli, and flavourful dishes featuring kimchi and miso.

The standout for me was the yuzu shiso-marinated lamb rump with pear tomato miso and kimchi. It was beautifully balanced, and packed with nutritional goodness.

Back in my room, I took a long shower, made a chamomile tea and curled up with my book. I slept exceptionally well (no small thing when away from home) and woke feeling refreshed and energised enough for an early morning weights workout before breakfast. Afterwards, I opted for yoghurt and homemade granola, the perfect start to the week ahead.

Local activities

As you’d expect from London, there’s no shortage of things to do nearby. During your stay, I’d recommend carving out time for some of the area’s best wellness-inspired spots. A few of my favourites (below) are just a short walk away.

  • Artful wandering: Take a walk through the local streets to admire the world-class street art. The perfect way to get your steps in while staying inspired.
  • The Whitechapel Gallery: A fabulous contemporary art gallery just a short stroll away.
  • Bustling Brick Lane: Ideal for exploring independent boutiques, vintage clothing and local heritage.
  • The Shoreditch Spa: For those after a relaxing treatment during their trip.
  • Pinot & Picasso: Try a “sip and paint” session to unlock your creative flow.

The verdict

Hart Shoreditch is ideal for city lovers seeking a pocket of restorative calm. A place I would highly recommend for anyone looking to explore East London.
