Need a winter break? Try this Liz-approved Apine spa…

Tucked into the heart of one of Austria’s prettiest villages, Der Böeglerhof is where 500 years of history meet contemporary luxury and deeply restorative wellness.

As the first and only five-star hotel in idyllic Alpbach, it offers a rare combination of heritage, elegance, and Alpine tranquillity – a truly ideal escape that cleverly manages to cater for couples, solo travellers, and families seeking a nature-immersed retreat.

Liz reviews Der Böeglerhof, Alpbach

Heritage with heart

Once a humble farmhouse, Der Böeglerhof evolved into an inn in the 19th century and is now lovingly run by the Duftner family. Their passion for hospitality and preserving tradition shines through at every turn: centuries-old timber, original features, and an atmosphere that feels both intimate and steeped in story.

The award-winning Fuggerstube restaurant, which has welcomed guests since medieval times, remains a highlight, serving refined Alpine cuisine in surroundings rich with character.

Beneath it lies the hotel’s 500-year-old wine cellar, meticulously preserved and home to regular tastings – an unmissable experience for wine lovers.

A new era of Alpine wellness

For me though, the hotel’s more recent expansion into wellness is the star of the show. This stand-alone spa complex boasts an adult-only spa with panoramic saunas, serene relaxation rooms, a yoga studio, outdoor pool, and huge wild swimming pond with breathtaking views across the Kitzbühel Alps.

Taking the kids? Families are equally well cared for with another enormous spa area on the other side of the building, featuring an indoor–outdoor pool and ‘clothes-on’ sauna and steam rooms, ensuring everyone can unwind apres-ski or post mountain bike trek with ease. Teens will love the table pool and games rooms too – thoughtful additions.

The surrounding area lends itself to mountain walks, cycle rides and strolls through the forests as well as kayaking, tobogganing and year-round mountain adventures. In winter, the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau area – one of Tirol’s best-loved ski regions – offers 113 km (70 miles) of varied pistes, all within easy reach.

For those seeking a more indoor retreat, there’s plenty to immerse yourself in the weekly Wellness Programme, with more than 30 restorative activities – from yoga and meditation to sound therapy and expertly led sauna infusions.

Skilled therapists provide holistic facial and body treatments using natural products too – nurturing and luxurious. Sustainability is also far more than a trend here, it’s a philosophy. The hotel uses eco-friendly systems, solar energy, and actively supports local biodiversity with initiatives such as birdhouses and bee hotels, all helping protect the natural environment that makes the Alpbach area so special.

A true treat for foodies

The food at Der Böeglerhof is nothing short of exceptional.

Mornings begin with an abundant breakfast buffet  – wellness personified, fresh, local and beautifully curated. From pastured buttermilk to five different types of butter, this is my kind of feast.

Dinners are exquisitely prepared and presented, with the warm, charming restaurant team creating an atmosphere that feels more like being welcomed as an honoured guest of the household than dining in a hotel. It’s this combination of craft, care, and genuine hospitality that makes the culinary experience so memorable.

I loved it so much, in fact, that I’m already planning to return with more of my family.

In a nutshell

Der Böglerhof is a rare find: a destination where deep-rooted history and state-of-the-art wellness blend effortlessly with warm hospitality and Alpine beauty. Whether you come for the spa, the food, the fresh mountain air, or simply the chance to pause and reset, this remarkable Tirol establishment offers nourishment for body, mind, and soul.

A heartfelt thank you to the Duftner family for creating such a special place.
